Artist statement

The Raven (Spa:l'), a significant figure in Musqueam culture, is a powerful transformer. Spa:l' symbolizes humour, change in life, and a lightness of being. It is also known as the cultural hero and the trickster, capable of both generosity and greed. Its unpredictable nature means it is regarded with both respect and wariness, adding to its enigmatic charm. Spa:l' is continually looking for things to entertain himself. Call them playful and curious, crafty and cunning; spa;l' is observed misbehaving and never dull. Just like us, every person sees the world in a different way than another. In many Musqueam stories, spa:l' teaches us about life and right from wrong. He symbolizes the change in life, creativity, and humour.
