Artist statement
The three images presented depict a single person reading in a serene Vancouver setting and are all inspired by Fragonard's lighthearted paintings of people enjoying the outdoors while reading. The images on their own work as studies in landscapes and reading, but from a distance can be viewed as an examination of primary colour. On one level, the works refer to modern painting and studies in abstraction. Consequently, the three images depict not only a solitary figure reading, but if one were to step back and view the works in their entirety, they would be overwhelmed by the graphic primary colour palette.
