Artist statement

Indigenous Matriarchs was exhibited on a billboard at Arbutus Street and West 12th Avenue from February 7 - May 1, 2022.

Indigenous Matriarchs is a multimedia work that uses poetry and photography to pay tribute to the artist Chrystal Sparrow’s Coast Salish and Cree matriarchal lineage.

Sparrow’s work was created to respect and honour the powerful women in her family and present Indigenous women as beautiful and moving. The names of the Coast Salish matriarchs she honours with this work are great-grandmother Rose Sparrow, from xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), and grandmother Esther Sparrow, from shíshálh (Sechelt). The names of the Shuswap (Esk'etemc) matriarchs are great-grandmother Angelina Wycotte, grandmother Elizabeth Wycotte, and Sparrow’s own mother Marianne Sparrow.
